MARATHON

Marine Corps Marathon
CHALLENGE

The Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) has been around since 1976. Nicknamed “The People’s Marathon,” it weaves runners throughout the Virginia and DC area, taking them past some of the country’s most iconic monuments, including the US Marine Corps War Memorial at the finish. The logo has always been based on this statue of the flag raising at Iwo Jima, but they wanted a modernized representation of the scene.

SOLUTION

Maintaining the overall story of the logo, I was able use simplified shapes to create the men and the flag. The angled shapes were nested into one another using positive and negative space to create the monument’s recognizable silhouette. The end result was a clean visual identity with the kinetic feeling befitting a world class sporting event.
